GENERAL INFORMATION OF CAMBODIA

Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia at the southern part of Indochina. Cambodia’s land area is 181,035 square kilometers. The geographical location is in the middle of other ASEAN countries, which makes it easy accessible. Geographically, Cambodia is situated between the 10th-15th parallels of northern longitude and between 102nd – 108th eastern attitudes. The geographical location indicates that Cambodia is a tropical, warm and humid country. It is affected by the Asian monsoon with a lot of rain to enable growth of vegetation and all varieties of crops.

POPULATION

Cambodia’s total population is more than 14 million people, Khmer people accounted for about 90% of citizens, and ethnic groups are 10%.

LANGUAGE

Khmer is the official language. It is inherited from the Mon-Khmer family and enriched by Indian Pali and Sanskrit languages. There are various dialects spoken in areas outside Phnom Penh Capital.

English is the second language, followed by French, even though they are not widely spoken, except in the capital.

PHNOM PENH CAPITAL

Phnom Penh covers an area of 290 km2 with more than 1.27 million inhabitants. It is considered as a major industrial, administrative, commercial, communication- and tourism center for home- and world services. Valuable tropical products can be found here including seafood, fresh water food, delicious fruits, handicrafts and artistic articles. The city offers tourists a lot of modern hotels and restaurants with diversified services.

TOPOGRAPHY OF LAND

In general, Cambodia is low-lying and flat in the middle. The country is enclosed by mountains, plateaus and coastal area at the Southwest part. In principle, Cambodia has been classified into four main parts: Plain Area; Tonle Sap Area; Coastal Area; Plateau and Mountainous Area.

CLIMATE

Cambodia is affected by the tropical weather, which causes the country to be warm and humid. The maximum temperature ranges from 27.5o C to 29.5o C (March and April are the hottest months) and the minimum temperature ranges from 24o C to 26.5o C (January is the coolest month). The figures can be changed in some areas such as mountainous area and plateau area (the average temperature of Bokor Mountain is 20o C). Cambodia doesn’t have a too-hot season or a too-cool season, which is suitable for tourists to travel. From one season to another, the temperature changes less than 4o C.

RELIGION

The official religion is Theravada Buddhism. Ninety percent of Khmers follow this religion. The country also has minority religion such as Islam and Christianity.

LOCAL TIME

Cambodia runs 7 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), the same time zone as its neighbors Laos, Vietnam and Thailand.

CURRENCY

The Riel Denominations are Riel 100,000; 50,000; 20,000; 10,000; 5,000; 2,000; 1,000; 500; 200; 100. Foreign currencies can be easily changed at hotels, airports or markets. The exchange rate is always fluctuated slightly. In general, one US Dollar is equivalent to 4,000 Riels.

POST AND COMMUNICATION

Post is now routed by air through Bangkok, which makes sending mail and parcels from Cambodia much more reliable than in the past. Most hotels have IDD lines, but calls and faxes are very expensive (to Australia, Europe and USA approximately US$7 per minute.) Public phones that use pre-paid phone cards are now common in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Phone cards can be purchased at the post office, most hotels and supermarkets.

INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS

The direct flights to Phnom Penh are available from Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Taipei and Vientiane. Airline currently serving Phnom Penh are Lao Aviation, Dragonair, Bangkok Airways, Eva Air, Silk Air, Malaysia Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Thai Airways International, China Southern Airlines and Vietnam Airlines.

The direct flights to Siem Reap are available from Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, Singapore, and Vientiane. Currently, the airlines serving Siem Reap are Vietnam Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Silk Air, Lao Aviation and Malaysia Airlines.

VISAS

Immigration formalities are faster when travelers already possess their visa. However, Cambodia has liberal visa regulations. The visa on arrival valid for a thirty-day stay is issued to each tourist at a cost of US$20 at the Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport and International border-checkpoint. One passport photo is needed. Every traveler has to complete an immigration and a customs form during the arrival flight or upon arrival.

SECURITY NOTICE

After several years of political and social upheaval, Cambodia is now enjoying security and stability. Ongoing efforts are made to rebuild the country from decades of war, to upgrade the infrastructures (roads, bridges, airports, etc) and to ensure its security. Cambodia is now once again safe for travel.
